What I’m Binge Watching Right Now

I feel like everyone indulges in a Netflix binge every once in a while. Personally, I love the occasional binge! Sometimes I feel like I spend so much time racing around from one thing to the next that I forget to just relax and be a little lazy. That’s where Netflix is a big help (occasionally too big of a help) because there is a never ending supply of shows and movies at the click of a mouse. I have this problem where I start a series and then someone tells me about another good series and I start that one too. I end up bouncing back and forth between a few different series so I’m never watching just one at a time. Here are few shows that I’m currently hooked on:

House of Cards

This is a political drama starring Kevin Spacey as Frank Underwood who is part of Congress. In exchange for his support in the election of President Garret Walker, Underwood is promised the Secretary of State nomination. After his election, Walker changes his mind, does not nominate him and so begins Underwood’s quest for revenge in which he and his wife, Claire, vow to destroy Walker and all his allies. Every time I think that Underwood can’t possibly be any more ruthless, he does something new to make my jaw hit the floor and click “next episode”. Kevin Spacey does a phenomenal job throughout the series. Although it makes me wonder where these ideas come from? Do these kinds of things actually happen in Washington? Prepare yourself before you watch and do not watch with children as this show is definitely not suitable for all ages.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

This one is just adorable. Penned in part by Tina Fey, this is a comedy staring Ellie Kemper as Kimmy Schmidt, a woman who was held in an underground bunker by a supposed reverend for 15 years. When she is finally saved she ends up on a talk show in New York City and after the show she decides she’s staying in New York. Armed with nothing but a backpack, Kimmy takes on the city where she makes friends with Tituss Andromedon and gets a job as a nanny for a wealthy family with a stepmother who needs all the help she can get. Ellie Kemper has quickly become one of my favorite actresses. It’s cute, it’s quirky, and it’s hard not to keep clicking “next episode”.

The Ranch

Another Netflix original, this is a sitcom with a bit of an edge. You’ll notice some familiar faces as this one stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson (That 70s Show) as brothers Colt and Jameson ‘Rooster’ Bennett  living on a ranch in Colorado with their dad, Beau. Tensions are flaring when Colt returns to the ranch after abandoning his family 15 years ago to chase his dream as a professional football player. Toss in Colt’s ex-girlfriend, Abby, and their sometimes seemingly estranged mother, Maggie, and this makes for a heartwarming comedy that pulls at your heart strings. It’s easy to fly through this one as each episode is only 30 minutes and it’s just adorable enough to make you wonder what will happen next. Be advised, this one has some foul language you may not the young ones to overhear.

The Blacklist

Another drama that’s hard to turn away from, The Blacklist introduces us to Raymond Reddington, a former government agent turned fugitive played by James Spader, and Elizabeth Keen, a recent Quantico graduate played by Megan Boone. Reddington willingly surrenders to the FBI and offers to reveal a list of criminals he has compiled over the years, called the blacklist, and help the FBI put them all away. That is, under the condition that he only works with Elizabeth Keen. This drama spins a confusing web as criminals are revealed and connections are made that you never saw coming. The whole time you’re wondering why Reddington chose Elizabeth, what is his connection to her? The only way to find out is to keep clicking “next episode”.
