Happy Birthday Riley!

Okay guys, you’re about to be flooded with puppy pictures because Riley bug turns 4 today!! I can’t believe it’s already been four years since this little one came into the world. I can remember so vividly the first time I saw her. We adopted Riley from a friend who had a yellow lab that had puppies they hadn’t planned for. My brother Jake and I went to their house just a few days after they were born and we sat on the floor as all the puppies crawled, or attempted to crawl, around us. Jake and I picked up each puppy and checked them out, not sure which one would become ours. Riley, well the puppy that would later be named Riley, crawled over to me and put her head against my leg. I picked her up and held her for a bit then put her down to hold another puppy. While I was holding the other puppy Riley crawled right back over to put her head right back on my leg. She continued to do this as I checked out all the other puppies. I don’t know what it was but I felt a connection with her right away. Or maybe she felt the connection with me first and that’s why she wouldn’t take her head off my leg. Either way, that’s how I came to decide that Riley was the one. I used a red marker to put a heart on the top of her head and eagerly counted down the weeks until she was ready to come home. Six (long) weeks later, on June 25 – three days before my birthday, Riley was ready to come home and it’s been a crazy ride ever since.

This little one came into my life just after I got out of a horrible 4 year relationship. She mended my broken heart, she grew up with me and she gave me the strength to find myself again. She’s my best friend, sometimes my worst nightmare (like when she drags sticks in the house and destroys them in the living room or when she digs holes in the yard to play in the mud after a rainstorm), she’s even been my wing-woman a time or two. She’s loyal, she reads my emotions like a book, she cuddles up to me when she’s scared, she licks my face dry when I cry, she makes me smile when I’m sad. If you’re not a dog person you just wont get it, but this little girl has changed my life. I still can’t believe that she’s already four years old, I just need her to grow slower so she can stay with me forever. And now, for your viewing pleasure, a whole bunch of Riley photos because why not.

The day that Riley picked me – the funniest thing is that she still sleeps exactly like this, she’s a 75lb lap dog

She has always loved to cuddle and grew A LOT just in the first month!

Born into a hockey family, she learned to love the game early

It was basically a daily occurrence when she was small, and even now, that she played so hard she passed right out with her toys in her paws

Ellie the Elephant was her first and favorite toy – Ellie got stitches on more than one occasion and eventually had to be retired

Always one for cuddling – if she’s in my bed she has to be touching me in some way
